The Hannali form a traditional social group integrated into Sinhalese society in Sri Lanka. Historically associated with crafts, particularly tailoring and the production of ceremonial textiles, their members share the Sinhala language and the island’s rich cultural heritage.
Despite the country’s profound socioeconomic changes in recent decades, the group preserves strong community ties and an identity shaped by local traditions of mutual cooperation in villages and urban centers.

Daily life among the Hannali reflects the transition from ancestral handicrafts to farming, small-scale commerce and paid employment. Families place great value on respect for elders and support among relatives during important events, such as weddings and Sinhalese New Year celebrations, when traditional rice and coconut dishes bring the community together.
The great majority follow the Theravada Buddhist tradition, which is deeply rooted in their ancestral culture. In daily life, the pursuit of merit and observance of moral precepts blend with folk customs, such as offerings to local deities and the use of amulets to ward off harm and seek protection for the home.

Financial crises and recent inflation in Sri Lanka have put pressure on Hannali households, making access to stable employment and skills training for young people urgent needs. Spiritually, they need a personal encounter with the living God, experiencing a fellowship that dispels discouragement and renews hope within families.
