Highland Totonac
The Highland Totonac are an indigenous people who live on the mountain slopes of eastern Mexico, mainly between the states of Puebla and Veracruz. Keepers of a history spanning millennia and reaching back to great Mesoamerican ceremonial centers, they keep their native language alive and maintain a deep attachment to their ancestral lands.
Their identity is shaped by community life in the mountain villages, where traditional customs, shared labor, and textile arts preserve a rich cultural heritage amid the pressures of the modern world.

Subsistence farming supports most families on the steep mountain slopes. Growing corn, beans, and coffee is at the center of daily life, supplemented by raising small domestic animals. Communal work, based on mutual help among neighbors and relatives, remains essential for the harvest and the upkeep of the villages.
Most practice a traditional Catholicism closely intertwined with the ancestral Totonac worldview, revering elements of nature and ancestral spirits as they seek protection for their crops. Although there is a visible and active evangelical presence, those who decide to break with the village’s traditional rites often face rejection from their families and communities.

The mountain communities face geographic isolation, with poor roads and limited access to hospitals and basic sanitation. The search for work leads many young people to migrate to large cities, threatening cultural continuity. Spiritually, the villages lack resources for deep discipleship and trained pastoral leadership.
