People
The Huaylas Quechua live in the inter-Andean valleys of the department of Áncash, Peru, at the foot of the imposing Cordillera Blanca. Heirs of ancient Andean civilizations, they preserve a rich cultural and linguistic tradition expressed in their own variety of Quechua. Community life is marked by a strong attachment to the land and deep bonds of cooperation among neighbors. Despite the growing influence of urban life and Spanish, this people keeps alive its colorful clothing, folk music, and deep connection with the mountains surrounding its villages.

Most make their living through family farming on terraces along Andean slopes, growing potatoes, corn, broad beans, and wheat, as well as keeping small flocks of sheep and domestic animals. Traditional communal work still brings neighbors together for planting and harvesting. Weekly fairs and markets are vital centers of trade and social interaction, where families sell their produce and preserve their customs.
Local spirituality combines elements of traditional Catholicism with ancient Andean beliefs. Celebrations honoring patron saints coexist with rituals of gratitude to Mother Earth and respect for protective mountain spirits. Local religious festivals draw widespread participation and serve to unite the community and seek protection for the harvests.

Communities in mountain areas face severe cold, geographical isolation, and a lack of basic health services. Spiritually, the priorities are in-depth discipleship, promoting literacy for reading the Scriptures, and training Quechua leaders who can teach and pastor their own people in everyday life.
