Who they are
The Isanzu live in communities in the Singida Region of central Tanzania. They are also known as Anyihanzu and speak Kinyihanzu, a Bantu language. Swahili, used for communication between different peoples in the country, is also widely spoken among them. Family organization follows the maternal line, meaning that kinship groups are defined through the mother’s side. Farming employs much of the population, and work in other parts of Tanzania also helps support families.

How they live
Fields of sorghum, millet and corn support many Isanzu families. Some people also seek work outside their region, especially in Arusha. Water is a challenge in the dry season because local rivers do not flow year-round. The timing of the rains and the availability of water therefore directly affect those who make their living from farming.
What they believe
Traditional religions remain the main religious influence among the Isanzu. Among Christians, the Lutheran Church has a prominent presence and is led by local pastors. There are also Pentecostal, Anglican and Catholic Christians, as well as a small Muslim minority. Some who call themselves Christians have only a nominal connection to the church, making personal guidance and teaching in the faith important.

Needs
Securing enough water during the dry season is a practical need for Isanzu families. In the churches, local pastors need support to teach the Bible and guide those who identify as Christian without living out that faith personally. Only portions of the Bible have been translated into Kinyihanzu so far, and their use in teaching families is also a priority for prayer.
