People
The Kalanguya are an indigenous community living on the wooded slopes and in the mountain valleys of the Cordillera Central and the Caraballo Mountains in the northern Philippines. With a deep connection to the highland forests, they preserve ancestral customs and a language of their own that distinguishes them from neighboring peoples.
Their identity is shaped by their intimate connection to the land and by community life in the villages, where the traditional leadership of elders and mutual cooperation still guide daily routines and collective decisions.

The Kalanguya depend on traditional hillside farming for their livelihoods, growing sweet potatoes, rice, and cool-climate vegetables, as well as raising small livestock. They have developed recognized forest management methods that protect water sources and fertile soils. Cooperative work and strong family ties maintain social cohesion in the villages.
The traditional worldview involves reverence for nature spirits and rituals devoted to harmony between creation and the ancestors. Over recent decades, many Kalanguya have embraced Christianity, which coexists with ancient ceremonial practices. The great spiritual longing is for a sound biblical faith to be strengthened, transforming hearts without erasing their rich communal heritage.
A people only truly understands the gospel when they hear it in the language of their heart. See how far the translation has come.

Steep roads and geographic remoteness make it difficult to transport goods and access hospitals and technical schools. Environmental changes and frequent storms threaten harvests. Spiritually, the local church needs training materials adapted to the cultural context and support to strengthen families and younger generations in the Word.
