Who they are

The Keiyo live in Kenya, in the highlands near Eldoret, in Uasin Gishu and Elgeyo-Marakwet counties. They are one of the Kalenjin peoples, who share closely related languages and traditions, and are also known as the Elgeyo. Their land includes the Elgeyo escarpment and the Kerio River valley.

Their oral tradition preserves stories, songs, proverbs and riddles. Proverbs are used to advise younger people and settle disagreements. People and animals share the stage in their stories, while riddles play with words and are especially popular among children.

How they live

In rural areas, small farms provide part of the families’ livelihood. Their diet includes milk, meat and grains such as sorghum, maize and millet, and they raise cattle, goats and sheep. Some families have also moved to towns and cities and work in various businesses. Age groups continue to create bonds among men of the same generation and reinforce respect for elders, although these groups have lost their former military role.

What they believe

The first mission station in Keiyo district opened in Kesup in 1937. In the following decades, Keiyo were trained as evangelists and pastors, and churches and schools were established. Today, most identify as Christians, but a considerable number also follow traditional religion. The gospel has a strong witness among them, and the churches need a fresh work of God in their midst.

Needs

The Keiyo need more clinics and better access to hospitals. Better schools and classrooms can open doors to new careers. There is also a spiritual need: churches need renewal, and Christian families need a faith lived out in daily life, with love, respect and faithfulness between husband and wife.
