Unreached people group
Kalmyk-Oirat
The Kalmyk-Oirat descend from the western Mongols and form a distinctive people known for preserving Mongolic culture on the steppes near the Caspian Sea and in parts of Central Asia. They are recognized as the only people with a Buddhist tradition to have historically settled on European soil.
Their identity is shaped by the Oirat language, rich oral narratives such as the epic of Jangar, and a strong commitment to their ancestral heritage.

Historically nomadic breeders of horses, camels, and sheep, most Kalmyks now live in rural villages and urban areas, working in agriculture, livestock farming, public service, and trade. Community life places great value on hospitality, tea with milk and butter, and family gatherings on special occasions.
The vast majority follow Tibetan Buddhism, a central element in the people’s cultural survival through centuries of repression and forced migration. Traditional Mongolian shamanic practices remain part of daily life, associated with reverence for the forces of nature and the blessing of homes.

Many communities face economic challenges, unemployment, and the ongoing departure of young people for major urban centers. Spiritually, there is a lack of consistent Christian witness and materials that present the message of Jesus in their own language and cultural frame of reference.
