People
The Kamano are an indigenous people living in the highlands of Papua New Guinea, mainly in Eastern Highlands Province. They live in villages scattered across fertile valleys and mountain slopes, where community life is strongly shaped by clan loyalty and the preservation of oral traditions. The Kamano language lies at the heart of the group’s identity, serving as the main medium for their songs, community decisions, and everyday interactions, keeping families united amid the country’s constant changes.

Family farming sustains Kamano communities, particularly the cultivation of sweet potatoes and vegetables and the raising of pigs, which play an essential role in ceremonies and social exchanges. Small coffee plots provide households with their main source of cash income. Social organization is based on patrilineal clans, with the leadership of household heads, cooperation in farming, and care for the community guiding daily life together.
The vast majority of the Kamano have embraced Christianity over decades of work by various missions in the highlands, and church attendance is part of community life. Even so, remnants of animist beliefs and fear of spirits or occult practices persist in popular belief. This highlights the need for an ever deeper faith in the sufficiency of Christ.

Communities face practical challenges in accessing well-equipped health clinics, well-maintained roads, and quality formal education for younger generations. Spiritually, there is a lack of ongoing discipleship and pastoral training, which are needed to help people respond biblically to tensions between clans and to distress associated with traditional beliefs in witchcraft.
