The Kamwe are a people who live mainly on the mountain slopes of northeastern Nigeria, near the border with Cameroon. With a strong sense of communal identity, they carefully preserve their mother tongue and maintain deep ties to the highlands of the Mandara Mountains.
Historically known for their cultural resilience in the face of outside pressures, the Kamwe have a supportive social structure and a rich oral tradition, expressed in songs, proverbs, and stories passed down from generation to generation.

Most Kamwe families rely on subsistence farming, growing grains such as corn, sorghum, and millet in the valleys and on mountain terraces. Raising small livestock and weaving provide additional livelihoods in the villages.
Community life is structured around family ties and respect for elders. Village meetings and market days are vital occasions for trade, celebration, and strengthening mutual support.
The vast majority of the Kamwe identify with the Christian faith, the fruit of generations of gospel presence in the region. However, many families still retain practices and fears associated with traditional African religion and ancestor worship.
The central challenge is discipleship rooted in the Word of God, so that faith transforms every area of everyday life and dispels the fear of hidden spiritual forces.
A people only truly understands the gospel when they hear it in the language of their heart. See how far the translation has come.

The region where the Kamwe live has suffered from insecurity and attacks by insurgent groups, displacing families and destroying livelihoods. There is a great need for psychological support, reliable schooling, and biblical training programs that help the local church cope with loss and deep trauma.
