People
The Karaiyar are a community with coastal and seafaring traditions, living mainly in the coastal regions of northern and eastern Sri Lanka and parts of southern India. Tamil-speaking, they maintain a deep and historic relationship with the sea, which has shaped their customs, collective identity, and survival over many generations.
Known for their courage in navigation and deep-sea fishing, the Karaiyar maintain close-knit villages where working together and solidarity among neighbors sustain daily life amid the challenges of the coast.

Daily life among the Karaiyar revolves around the sea. Men set out early in boats and canoes to fish, while women play a vital role in salting, drying, and selling fish in local markets. Daily meals feature fresh fish and seafood prepared with rice and traditional Tamil seasonings. Villages maintain community councils to organize fishing seasons and provide mutual assistance during storms or material losses.
Most Karaiyar practice Hinduism, revering deities that protect the waters and sea voyages, as well as maintaining household shrines. Rituals and offerings before casting nets into the sea are common, seeking safety and a good catch. There is also a significant historical Christian presence among them, although many families still do not understand the essence of the gospel of grace.
A people only truly understands the gospel when they hear it in the language of their heart. See how far the translation has come.

Coastal communities face unstable weather, periodic shortages of fish, and the coastal impact of storms at sea. Alongside access to better vocational training opportunities and health care resources, there is a great need for biblical discipleship and personal knowledge of God’s Word among families.
