Who they are

The Karipuna of Amapá live in the Curipi River basin, in the Oiapoque region of Brazil’s far north. Shaped by a history of contact and life along the border with French Guiana, they have developed a distinctive cultural identity, preserving ancestral traditions and the use of their own Creole language alongside Portuguese. Their way of life centers on fishing, farming, and a rich communal life in the Amazon.
