Who they are

The Kathonglueng are a small, quiet people of central Laos. They live in Bolikhamxai Province, in Khamkeut District, in rural villages where life follows the rhythm of the seasons and the rice.

A predominantly rural people, the Kathonglueng speak Lao in daily life, the language that connects them to their neighbors, to the markets and to the rest of the country. This means that their own identity, with its name, memory and customs, lives alongside a common language, and that very little has been written about who they are.

Because they are so few and live far from the large centers, they rarely appear in studies or in maps of peoples. Even so, each village holds ties of kinship, traditions inherited from the ancestors and its own way of looking at the land and at the spirits that, they believe, protect it. Getting to know them begins with recognizing that they exist and that they matter.

How they live

The life of the Kathonglueng revolves around the land. They grow rice and keep gardens beside their homes, and the little that is left of the harvest is taken to sell at nearby markets. The farming calendar organizes work and gatherings, and knowledge is passed down orally from one generation to the next, including the skills of handwoven basketry.

The communities live in rural villages, where closeness encourages mutual help in the fields and daily fellowship. Access to school, health services and markets is usually limited, so life depends heavily on cooperation among neighbors. Speaking Lao allows these villagers to move between their village and the wider world, without losing their bond with the land of their ancestors.

What they believe

The faith of the Kathonglueng is, for the most part, the traditional religion of their ancestors. It is expressed in respect for the guardian spirits of the villages, in rituals tied to the land and in the veneration of ancestors, who continue to be remembered as part of the community. The relationship with the unseen world is interwoven with work in the fields, with health and with the important events of the family.

There is also some influence of Theravada Buddhism, present in Laos all around them, which mixes with local practices without erasing them. For many, believing is above all belonging: religion is an inheritance of family and village, not an individual choice. For this reason, speaking of another faith is usually understood as speaking of another people, and not merely of another idea.

Language and the Bible

There is no Scripture in the Kathonglueng’s own language. What exists is the complete Bible in Lao, the language they speak every day, also available in digital format. There are also materials in Lao that can reach them: audio Bible teaching, the film about the life of Jesus and a literacy primer. For a people who pass on knowledge orally and have little access to school, audio and told stories tend to be the most natural way for the Word to reach their homes.

Barriers to the gospel

Among the Kathonglueng, the religion of the ancestors is part of the village’s identity, and following another path can be seen as turning away from family and community. Isolated rural life, the very small number of people and the distance from the centers make contact with someone who knows Jesus rare. Added to this are the absence of Scripture in the language of the heart and limited access to education, which makes it hard to read written materials even in Lao.

Needs

Many Kathonglueng communities live with restricted access to school, health care and markets, and there is a real need for improvements in literacy, health and agriculture that respect the local way of life.

On the spiritual side, there is no community of faith that lives out and proclaims the gospel in a way they can understand. What is needed are people willing to live nearby, learn the local speech and walk alongside them for the long term, along with oral Bible stories, audio Scriptures, simple discipleship materials and leaders raised up from within the people themselves.
