People
The Kera live in southern Chad and northern Cameroon. In Chad, they live in the Mayo-Kebbi Est Region, in the Mont d’Illi Department, south of Fianga, near Lake Tikem. In Cameroon, they live in the Mayo-Danay Department in the Far North Region, and there are also speakers in the North Region. The Kera language belongs to the East Chadic branch.
The Kera live near the Tupuri, and the two peoples are often confused with each other. The Tupuri language, however, belongs to a different language family.

The Kera live in close contact with the Tupuri, and there are marriages between the two peoples. Field research in Illi, Chad, published in 2023, showed that Tupuri tends to dominate in households where one parent is Tupuri and the other Kera, and that children in these households often speak more Tupuri than Kera.
In Chad, most Kera follow traditional religion, and some are Christians. In Cameroon, there are Muslims, Christians, and followers of traditional religion, with similar proportions of Muslims and Christians.

The Kera language is losing ground. The 2023 study found that most Kera speak Tupuri in almost all conversations and that some families no longer teach Kera to their children, only Tupuri. Christian teaching needs to reach families in the language their children use at home.
