Unreached people group
Khatavueng
The Khatavueng are a small people of central Laos, living mainly in Bolikhamxai Province, in the area of Khamkeut District. They are among the least known communities in the country: little has been published about them, and almost nothing about their language and way of life has ever been documented.
The few available records associate them with the Mon-Khmer family, although classifications do not always agree. They live in a region of rugged terrain, where several small peoples live side by side, each with its own identity.
Because they are few, the Khatavueng are rarely mentioned outside their region. This does not diminish the worth of their people: every family there carries a story, a mother tongue and a place in the heart of God, even if the world hardly knows their names.
The history of the Khatavueng in Laos is poorly documented in published ethnographies. The available classifications link them to the Mon-Khmer branch, one of the oldest in Southeast Asia, but the details of their origin remain uncertain.
Their accounts of migration and founding, passed down from generation to generation, still wait to be recorded with care and respect. Until then, what can be said honestly is little, and this silence is an invitation to attention and prayer for this people.

The language of the Khatavueng is not yet well identified in linguistic catalogs, and there is no known Scripture, recording or Christian material prepared specifically for them. For them to hear the Word in the language of the heart, their speech will first have to be learned with patience and friendship. If the transmission of the language is mostly oral, Bible stories recorded in audio will be a natural path once there are people to prepare them.
The greatest barrier is silence: few people know the Khatavueng, and they have almost never been sought out by those who carry the gospel. It is estimated that there are practically no Christians among them, so they lack neighbors and witnesses who speak of Jesus in their own language. The absence of a well-documented language and of any Bible material in their speech makes the possibility of hearing and understanding the message of Jesus even more distant.
The Khatavueng need, above all, for someone to get to know them and listen to them. In small communities in mountainous regions, health care, clean water and support for farming are often real needs, and respectful acts of service build trust.
Spiritually, they need people who will learn their language, Bible stories in oral format, and discipleship that grows from within the community itself, led by one of their own.
