The Khmer Krom are the indigenous ethnic Khmer population who traditionally inhabit southern Vietnam, especially the fertile lands of the Mekong River Delta, with communities also living in Cambodia. They preserve a cultural and linguistic identity closely connected to ancient Cambodia, keeping their ancestral customs, literature and musical traditions alive amid challenging social and political circumstances.

Most Khmer Krom families make their living through agriculture, particularly intensive rice cultivation, small-scale fishing in canals and rivers, and raising small livestock. Daily life revolves around the village and the community temple, which serves as a school and social center. Respect for elders, hospitality and mutual assistance during planting and harvest seasons are central values in everyday life.
The vast majority practice Theravada Buddhism, deeply interwoven with elements of animism and the veneration of ancestral spirits. The Buddhist temple is more than a sanctuary for prayer; it is the heart of their cultural heritage. For many, giving up this tradition means abandoning the roots of their own people.

Many communities face economic challenges, the loss of ancestral lands and pressure to assimilate culturally. There is an urgent need for improved sanitation, decent employment opportunities for young people and full religious freedom, as well as mentors who can walk alongside new believers in their own language.
