Koore
ReachedThe Koore, also known as Koorete or Amaro, inhabit the highlands and fertile hills east of Lake Abaya in southwestern Ethiopia. Belonging to the Omotic language family, they maintain a strong cultural identity tied to the land and mountains where they have lived for many generations.
Their mother tongue, Koorete, is central to community communication, songs, and the oral transmission of their traditions. The people are noted for their rich communal life and the meaningful embrace of the faith in their recent history.

Life among the Koore revolves around agriculture and livestock farming on the region’s fertile slopes. They primarily cultivate the false banana, known as enset, which forms the basis of their daily diet, along with cereals, coffee, and corn.
The social structure is sustained by solidarity among families and neighbors, who unite in preparing the soil, harvesting, and taking part in community celebrations. Village life values respect for elders and mutual support in times of hardship.
The vast majority of the Koore have embraced Christianity, with a strong presence of evangelical churches and Ethiopian Orthodox communities. The Christian faith has become an essential part of public life and family rituals.
Congregational worship is vibrant, characterized by participatory singing and earnest prayers in the local language. Traces of ancestral animistic beliefs have diminished in light of the community’s widespread Christian practice.
