People
The Kuman, also known as the Chimbu, inhabit the steep slopes and fertile valleys of the Papua New Guinea highlands. They speak the Kuman language and form one of the largest and most prominent societies in Chimbu Province.
Their identity is shaped by community life in the mountains, a rich oral tradition, and dynamic social alliances. Known for their adaptability and hard work, the Kuman have built strong, well-organized communities where family solidarity and cooperation between clans remain essential pillars of daily life.

Daily life in the villages revolves around farming on the hillsides, where sweet potatoes are the staple food crop. Pig farming has immense social and economic value and plays a vital role in celebrations, marriages, and peace agreements. Many farmers also grow coffee for income. Social life is organized around the clan, which values hospitality, public speaking, and resolving tensions as a community.
Most Kuman identify as Christians and actively participate in local congregations. However, elements of traditional animism, such as fear of territorial spirits and ancestral rituals, still coexist with Christian practice in various communities. The challenge is to develop a faith deeply rooted in God’s Word that dispels fears and shapes everyday decisions.

The mountainous terrain isolates many villages, limiting access to passable roads, adequate medical care, and quality schools. Tensions between clans and accusations rooted in traditional beliefs still affect community safety. There is a great need for sound biblical discipleship that inspires reconciliation, restoration, and care for families.
