People
The Kunyi live in the southern Republic of the Congo, in the Bouenza, Kouilou and Niari regions, south and southeast of Makabana, as far as the border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo. They speak Kunyi, which belongs to the Kongo language family. Almost all call themselves Christians, most of them from a Protestant tradition. In 2022, the Kunyi received a portion of the Bible in their own language: passages from Paul’s letters to Timothy, which are also available in an app.

Many Kunyi families make their living from farming and eat cassava, corn and local vegetables. Depending on where they live, they also fish, raise animals and engage in small-scale trade.
Almost all Kunyi identify as Christians, and most come from a Protestant tradition. Those who identify as Evangelicals, with a personal, living faith in Jesus, are a minority among the people.

Since almost everyone already calls themselves a Christian, the challenge is for faith to be personal and alive in every family, beyond an inherited tradition. This depends on clear biblical teaching and church leaders who equip people to teach. Scripture in Kunyi is still limited: there is the New Testament and, since 2022, new portions.
