In this area, the main crops are rice, maize and sorghum, while coconuts and bananas are sold for income. Cotton was an important crop until 1989, and families are now also beginning to grow sesame. Most villages have a mosque and a Quranic school. Traditionally, the Kutu trace descent through the mother’s side. Today, land is usually passed down through the father’s side, but a sister’s son is still entitled to a share.
Most Kutu are Sunni Muslims. Many also depend on the spirit world for their everyday needs because they see God as too distant, and so they use amulets to deal with spiritual forces. There are Christians among the Kutu, but they are few, and some of the people follow traditional religions.

The Kutu have many health needs. There are Christians among them, but they are few, and they need support in their faith and help to train new disciples in villages where most people are Muslim. The New Testament is available in Kutu, and reading and listening to it in families and Christian communities can nurture this faith.
