People
Who they are
The Laamang live in northeastern Nigeria, on the plains west of the Mandara Mountains in Borno State, with the town of Gwoza as their center. The name Lamang, meaning “our people,” was given by a German linguist in 1971 and is now accepted for several Lamang-speaking groups around Gwoza. The language belongs to the Chadic family of languages. Traditional beliefs predominate among them, but there are also Muslims and a Christian minority.
