People
Who they are
The Lahta live in east-central Myanmar, in Naypyitaw Union Territory and Shan State. They are related to the Padaung, but the languages of the two peoples are not mutually intelligible. The Lahta language is still widely used in the community, although many young people prefer Burmese, Kayan, or Pa-o. Buddhism is the most widely practiced religion; many retain traditional beliefs, and there is a Christian minority that includes Evangelicals.
