Lakhera

Lakhera tradition attributes their origin to the god Shiva, who is said to have created the people to make bangles for his wife, Parvati. This origin myth explains both the group's name and the deep bond between identity and trade: for centuries the Lakhera established themselves as a caste specialized in glass and lac work, forming communities across various regions of northern and central India.

Over time, the group spread to different states, carrying with them the trade and the name that identifies them to this day. The memory of this sacred origin remains present in how the Lakhera view their own work, treated not merely as a livelihood but as part of an identity inherited from generation to generation.

The Lakhera’s traditional trade is working with glass and lac to make bangles and bracelets, a skill passed from father to son and sold at local markets and fairs. Today many also pursue other professions, but the people’s name, which points back to this manual work, remains a mark of identity.

Social life revolves around caste: the Lakhera freely exchange food and water with most of their neighbors, but keep their distance from groups they consider of lower social standing. In many cases, they even revere the very tools of their trade, a sign of how closely the work is intertwined with the family’s faith and honor.

The Lakhera are Hindu, but their faith is divided among different devotions: some worship Shiva, considered the creator of the people, while others follow Vishnu or devote themselves to ancestor worship. This diversity coexists within the same community without conflict, as a natural part of the everyday religious life of a traditional Hindu caste.

Marriage is the most significant rite in Lakhera life, marked by the couple walking seven times around the sacred fire, a ceremony that seals the union before family and community. In some cases, the people also pay reverence to their own work tools, joining faith and trade in a single act of devotion that spans generations.

The heart language of most Lakhera is Hindi, which has had a complete Bible for decades, along with audio versions available. The challenge is not the lack of text but its reach: few Lakhera have ever read or heard these Scriptures, and access to the Word still depends on someone willing to bring it into the community itself.

Being Lakhera means belonging to a Hindu artisan caste, and changing religion is seen as abandoning both family and the trade inherited from generation to generation. Resistance to the gospel is strong in Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh, where most of the people live, and the caste structure reinforces the social isolation of anyone who turns away from tradition.

Like many artisan castes in India, the Lakhera face competition from mass produced goods that threaten the livelihood tied to their traditional trade, pressuring families to seek other sources of income outside glass and lac work. This economic shift challenges the way the group keeps its collective identity alive.

There is also a lack of nearby Christian presence: there are practically no churches or communities of faith established among the Lakhera, and anyone seeking to know Jesus can hardly find someone to walk alongside them. The absence of a nearby Christian witness keeps the community distant from the gospel even where the Bible is already available in their own language.
