Who they are
The Larantuka Malays live mainly in the coastal town of Larantuka and its surroundings, at the eastern tip of the island of Flores in Indonesia. Their history is linked to ancient maritime routes and prolonged contact with Portuguese traders, and they preserve their own traditions and a distinctive variety of Malay that bears traces of this historical exchange. Community life is deeply shaped by Sunni Islam, which guides family relationships and daily routines, alongside a longstanding Catholic minority.
