Who they are
The Makalero are an indigenous people who inhabit eastern East Timor, especially the municipality of Lautém. Unlike most neighboring peoples, who speak Austronesian languages, they preserve a language of Papuan origin that reflects ancient migrations. They maintain strong ties to the land and to the communal traditions that shape their cultural and social identity.
