People
The Mam are an indigenous people of Maya heritage who inhabit the western highlands of Guatemala and neighboring areas in southern Mexico. They preserve an ancient cultural identity passed down from generation to generation through their mother tongue and their sacred bond with the mountainous land where they live.
Known for their colorful textile art and communal wisdom, they face the challenges of modern life without relinquishing their ancestral customs. Village life revolves around mutual cooperation and deep respect for community elders.

Most families depend on subsistence farming, growing corn, beans, and coffee on steep slopes. Women are celebrated for their mastery of traditional looms, producing textiles rich in visual symbolism.
The social structure is strengthened by communal life, with important decisions going through local councils. However, a lack of income and fertile land has led many young people to migrate to urban centers.
Most identify with Christianity, although traditional Maya practices still strongly influence everyday rural life. In many villages, agricultural rites, reverence for ancestors, and invocations to guardians of nature coexist with formal religious festivities. There is also a growing number of evangelical congregations seeking to live out a faith grounded exclusively in Scripture.

The communities face geographical isolation, inadequate basic infrastructure, and limited access to medical services and quality education. There is also a great need for in-depth Bible studies to help local believers discern sound doctrine in the face of superficial teachings and animist traditions.
