Who they are

The Manchu are a people of profound historical significance in northeastern China, having once ruled one of the largest imperial dynasties in Asia. Although widely integrated into modern Chinese society, they keep alive the pride of their own cultural heritage.

The preservation of their roots has become a hallmark of their identity. While the vast majority communicates in Mandarin in daily life, there remains a constant effort to keep alive their customs, oral traditions, and collective memory amid the country’s rapid social transformations.

How they live

Today most Manchu live in cities and villages across northeastern China, working in agriculture, industry, and the service sector. Community life places great value on respect for the elderly and family cohesion. Traditional celebrations, folk dances, and regional cuisine, characterized by noodles and dishes prepared for harsh winters, continue to bring relatives and neighbors together.

What they believe

Most of the population professes no religious affiliation, reflecting decades of state secularism. Elements of traditional shamanism and ancestor veneration still influence family customs and funeral rites, but daily life is guided by a secularized, pragmatic worldview.
