Who they are

The Maori are the indigenous people of New Zealand, a land known in the Maori language as Aotearoa. With a living Polynesian heritage, they built a society shaped by respect for ancestors, a rich oral tradition and a deep connection to the land and sea.

Their identity finds expression in powerful ceremonial dances, woodcarving and community life at the marae, the traditional clan meeting place. Today, they keep their culture alive while actively participating in contemporary public life.

How they live

Community life revolves around the extended family and gatherings at the marae, a sacred space for dialogue and hospitality. Traditional cuisine includes hangi, a feast cooked with heated stones in the ground. Although most now live in urban areas, ties to their ancestral clans remain the foundation of each individual’s moral support and identity.

What they believe

Most identify with Christianity as a result of missionary work in past centuries. Alongside historic and evangelical denominations, religious movements with a distinctly Maori expression have emerged, such as Ratana and Ringatu. Ancestral spiritual elements, such as reverence for creation and ancestors, remain part of their shared worldview and daily life.

Needs

Many communities face challenges related to socioeconomic inequality, high incarceration rates and the search for cultural roots. There is a great need for initiatives offering emotional support, opportunities for young people and discipleship that brings their rich local heritage together with a living, biblical Christian faith.
