Historically rooted in rural community life, they maintain a deep sense of cultural identity, even after centuries of coexistence with Russian culture and profound political and social changes in Eastern Europe.

Daily life in the villages revolves around agriculture, traditional beekeeping, and cattle raising. Forests provide wild berries, mushrooms, and timber, which are central elements in their livelihood and handicrafts. Extended families and neighborhood bonds organize collective work, while local festivals celebrate harvest cycles and the arrival of spring with folk songs and garments embroidered with ancestral patterns.
Although many identify with Orthodox Christianity, the traditional Mari religion remains very active. Known as the last pagans of Europe, they hold ceremonies in sacred groves dedicated to nature spirits and a supreme deity. Animistic practices and Christian rites often coexist naturally and integrated within the daily life of the people.
