Who they are

The Megili, also called Migili, live in Nasarawa State in north-central Nigeria, mainly in the Awe and Lafia areas. Migili is also the name of their language. The history of the people is passed down through oral accounts and clan memories. Most live in farming villages, and many young people move to the cities. The people have encountered the influence of Islam and Christianity but have retained traditional customs.

How they live

Agriculture is the foundation of daily life. Men and women head to the fields early to grow millet, sorghum, beans, yams, and cassava. According to field research conducted in 2015, the Megili are major yam producers. During the harvest, from September to November, the yams are taken to southern Nigeria. A young person who meets an older person carrying a heavy load will usually help carry it to their doorstep. They also raise goats, sheep, and chickens.

What they believe

Followers of traditional religions make up the largest religious group, alongside Christians and a Muslim minority. In 2015, a researcher noted shrines in front of some houses and a sacred grove in Assakio, where traditional authorities conduct ceremonies during the New Yam festival. The Catholic Church was among the first churches to reach the people, and there are evangelical and Pentecostal churches in the communities.

Needs

Megili Christians need solid biblical teaching, discipleship, and mature churches in a setting where traditional beliefs remain present. The communities studied in 2015 faced poverty and had poorly equipped health facilities. Trained pastors, literacy programs, and medical care are among their specific requests.
