People
The Miskito are an Indigenous people who live along the Caribbean coast and in the river basins of Central America, across Nicaragua and Honduras. With strong ties to the water, they have developed a distinctive identity that blends ancestral Indigenous roots with Afro-Caribbean influences. They speak Miskito, a language widely maintained in daily life and community relationships. Their long history of resistance and deep attachment to the land make them a prominent presence in the Mosquitia region, where they preserve centuries-old traditions amid tropical forests, rivers, and mangroves.

Community life revolves around small-scale fishing, subsistence farming of cassava and bananas, and coastal diving. Villages are spread along the banks of rivers and lagoons, where wooden canoes remain the main means of transportation. Local decisions generally give weight to the voices of elders and mutual assistance among extended families, with community gatherings characterized by sharing and solidarity.
Most Miskito profess the Christian faith, reflecting the long-standing presence of historic Protestant and Catholic churches in the region. Community life is closely tied to the activities of local churches, although traditional beliefs associated with the spiritual world of the forest and rivers persist. There is a need for faith to go beyond community habit and lead to personal transformation and in-depth discipleship.

The communities suffer from geographic isolation, poor infrastructure, and limited health services, made worse by recurring severe storms. Diving for a living leaves many workers with serious lasting injuries. Spiritually, there is a need for ongoing discipleship and leadership training to help local churches grow in Christian maturity.
