The Mongondow primarily inhabit the fertile, mountainous region of Bolaang Mongondow in northern Sulawesi, Indonesia. With a rich cultural heritage dating back to ancient local kingdoms, they retain their own language and a strong attachment to communal traditions.
Historically known for agriculture and a communal spirit, the Mongondow balance ancestral customs with modern life in the province’s towns and villages. They form a distinctive cultural bridge between the neighboring peoples of Minahasa and Gorontalo, preserving their identity through traditional music and family celebrations.

Most Mongondow families make their living from agriculture, growing rice on irrigated terraces, along with corn, coffee, and coconuts. Communities deeply value the concept of mutual help, bringing relatives and neighbors together during planting and harvest seasons and when building houses.
Families are close-knit and respect the authority of elders. Dishes made with rice, fresh fish, and local vegetables seasoned with spices feature in daily meals and communal feasts.
The Mongondow community is religiously diverse, with large numbers of Christians and Muslims living in the same region. In many families, the Christian faith has been passed down through generations, while peaceful relationships have been maintained with relatives who hold other beliefs.
However, elements of traditional animism and beliefs in ancestral spirits still influence daily life for many, especially in rituals connected to the land, pointing to the need for deeper biblical discipleship.

Although there is a significant Christian presence in the region, there is a shortage of trained pastoral leaders and ongoing discipleship in the Mongondow language. Economically, farmers face unstable crop prices and a lack of infrastructure in remote villages. Young people need vocational training opportunities so they do not have to leave their homeland.
