The Murle are a people who live mainly on the plains and hills of eastern South Sudan and in areas along the Ethiopian border. Linguistically distinct from most of their Nilotic neighbors, they preserve a strong cultural identity tied to the land and their herds. Historically shaped by regional tensions and local disputes, they maintain firm social structures and a deep attachment to their ancestral traditions.

Daily life among the Murle revolves around cattle raising and subsistence farming, growing sorghum and corn. Animals represent not only material wealth but also social standing and marriage alliances. Society is organized into clans and age groups, in which elders provide moral leadership and decide community matters.
Most follow traditional religions, worshiping a supreme creator being associated with the sky, called Tammu. Rituals and sacrifices are performed to ask for rain, healing from illness and protection for the herds. Beliefs in spirits and fear of curses shape daily decisions and social relationships.
A people only truly understands the gospel when they hear it in the language of their heart. See how far the translation has come.

Murle communities face severe geographical isolation, a lack of medical infrastructure and high illiteracy rates. The effects of recurring droughts and local conflicts make humanitarian aid and sustainable development projects urgent, alongside discipleship to support the Christian witness in the region.
