People
Who they are
The Myene live in Gabon, along the coast, in the Libreville estuary and the Lambaréné area, and also in Port-Gentil. Their language belongs to the Bantu family and has six varieties: Mpongwe, Orungu, Galwa, Nkomi, Enenga and Adyumba. When researchers documented these varieties between 2010 and 2013, they found no children learning any of them as their mother tongue. Most Myene are Catholic or Protestant, and traditional beliefs remain among the people.
