Who they are
The Nen Banen live in Cameroon’s Centre and Littoral regions, in areas such as Ndikiniméki, Makénéné and Yingui. They are also known as Banen. Their language is Tunen, a Bantu language.
Tunen has varieties associated with each area: Tobouagne, Eling, Toun and Effombo. Eling is spoken in Nitoukou, and Effombo in areas south of Inoubou.

How they live
Information gathered in March and April 2020 among the Banen Ndogtuna in the Yabassi area described life in the community. Men fished, hunted and farmed; women also grew crops and cared for the home. Cassava and a sauce made from its leaves were part of their diet. Kinship groups were defined through the father’s line, and the village chief made decisions on behalf of the residents.
What they believe
Most Nen Banen identify as Christian, and a significant portion of the people follows traditional religions. Among the Banen Ndogtuna of Yabassi in 2020, a traditional healer still performed rituals honoring Ngambi, the spider spirit, when the community needed them.
