People
The Ngungwel live in the Republic of the Congo, in Plateaux Department, including Gamboma District. Also known as the Angungwel or Bangangoulou, they are part of the Teke peoples and live on both sides of the Nkéni River. Their neighbors are the Mbosi and Moye. The name Angungwel means something like people who live on the other bank.
Families live on what they grow in gardens and fields.

The Ngungwel have a long history of trade with their Mbosi neighbors. They exchanged peanuts, yams, tobacco and handicrafts, such as cloth and raffia items, for fish and braids. Trading took place in markets and through traders who traveled between villages. These exchanges also allowed farming and craft techniques to pass between the two peoples.
Most Ngungwel identify as Christians. Many, however, combine traditional beliefs with Christianity. Traditional religion once predominated. A group of Ngungwel men began translating the Bible into their people’s language on their own, without training, and later sought help with the work.
A people only truly understands the gospel when they hear it in the language of their heart. See how far the translation has come.

Ngungwel Christians need discipleship to stop combining traditional beliefs with faith in Jesus. Bible translation work in their language needs support and well-trained translators.
