Who they are

The Nguon (also written Nguồn) are a small people of north-central Vietnam, linked to the Viet-Mường group, the language family to which Vietnamese also belongs. They live mainly in Minh Hóa District, in Quảng Bình Province, and there is a small community across the border in Laos.

They speak a language of their own, which for a long time was treated as a mere dialect of Vietnamese or Mường. Folklore scholars and linguists have been showing that the Nguon language, narratives, festivals and customs set them apart from their neighbors. In an official list from 1979 they were counted as a branch of the Kinh majority, which helps explain why they are so little known outside their region.

More than a census category, being Nguon means belonging to a shared memory: the village, the ancestors, the celebrations of the calendar and the language spoken at home. They are a discreet people, who hold firmly to their own identity without fanfare.

History and origin

The origin of the Nguon is not well established. By language, they belong to the Viet-Mường branch, which points to roots shared with the peoples who gave rise to the Vietnamese and the Mường. Some linguists place them closer to Mường; others, closer to Vietnamese, and some consider theirs a third language of that same branch. Because of differences in language and customs, local scholars argue that over the centuries they formed a distinct culture.

In the twentieth century, the official classification of the Nguon was a matter of debate: they were included among the Kinh, and researchers such as the folklorist Đinh Thanh Dự argue to this day that they should be recognized as a separate people. The discussion shows how much the people value their own name and what it holds of history and tradition.

How they live

The Nguon live in villages in Minh Hóa District, in a region where life is predominantly rural. Family and kinship stand at the center of social life, and respect for parents and ancestors runs through the whole calendar. A much-loved custom is the “giỗ sống,” the meal of gratitude that children prepare for their parents while they are still alive when spring arrives, gathering the whole household around the table to wish for a year of peace and harmony. Children who work far away often return for the occasion.

Another high point of the year is Rằm tháng Ba, the festival of the fifteenth day of the third lunar month, tied to a tradition about the waterfall of the region. It brings entire communities together around a fair, games, songs and traditional foods, and it is one of the liveliest expressions of Nguon culture.

What they believe

The spiritual life of the Nguon is rooted in traditional ethnic religions: veneration of ancestors, the household altar and the offerings made at the festivals of the year shape their relationship with the unseen world. Many believe in spirits and deities who bless and protect the community, which reveals a deep longing for care and blessing.

In this worldview, honoring the dead and keeping the rites is also a way of honoring the living and the community. Faith and identity walk together: practicing the customs of the ancestors is part of what it means to be Nguon. There are almost no Christians among them.

Language and the Bible

The Nguon language is spoken in daily life in the villages, and it is in this language that the heart of the people expresses itself. A Bible translation work has begun in this language, but the Word of God is not yet fully available to those who speak it at home. Many Nguon are familiar with written Vietnamese, which they learn at school, yet Scripture in the mother tongue touches in a unique way the memory, the stories and the affection of a people.

Barriers to the gospel

The Nguon are so few and so little known that they rarely appear on the maps of those who think about sharing the gospel. Added to this is the bond between faith and identity: following the rites of the ancestors is part of belonging to the family and the village, and changing spiritual path can be seen as a break with the community. The absence of complete Scripture in their language and of a church of their own among them makes a first encounter with Jesus even rarer.

Needs

The Nguon need to be known and recognized for who they are: a people with their own language, memory and festivals. They live in a rural region, and the safety of families and daily livelihood are among the concerns of any such community. They also need friends who will visit them with respect, learn their language and listen to their story.

Spiritually, they need to find in their own language the good news that Jesus cares for families, forgives and gives life, and to find communities of faith where they can follow Christ without ceasing to be Nguon.
