People
The Nosu Shuixi live in the mountains of southern China, mostly in northern Guizhou Province, in counties such as Bijie, Qianxi, Dafang and Nayong. There are also families in Zhenxiong, in Yunnan, and a few in Gulin, in Sichuan. They call themselves Nosu; the name Shuixi was added to distinguish them from other Nosu groups in southern China who speak different languages. They are also called the Yi of Bijie, Dafang or Qianxi. They were the Yi group that migrated farthest to the northeast, fleeing Chinese military attacks.

Until 1949, many Nosu Shuixi owned large estates. According to an account from the early twentieth century, landowning families intermarried to combine and expand their holdings. Tenant farmers, including many Miao, lived in nearby villages and paid rent mainly in produce rather than money.
The traditional religion of the Nosu Shuixi has many gods, who must be pleased frequently to bring peace and prosperity to the community. There are also Nosu Shuixi Christians, most of them in Dafang and Nayong counties in Guizhou. Many heard the gospel from the A-hmao and the Gha-mu, two Miao peoples who live among them. In 1910, a missionary recorded seeing a church full of Nosu listening to a Miao preacher.

Nosu Shuixi Christians need a complete Bible in their language. Without the Old Testament, it is harder to understand the context of the gospel and the dangers of worshiping other gods. They also need a faithful translation of the gospel, teaching that helps them understand the message of Jesus, and Nosu workers who will take it to other peoples.
