Who they are
The Nuristani Waigeli inhabit the steep and remote mountain valleys of eastern Afghanistan. Guardians of their own language and a rich oral tradition, they live in villages built on hillsides, surrounded by forests and agricultural terraces. Historically converted to Islam at the end of the nineteenth century, they maintain a strong sense of family and community honor amidst a territory that is geographically difficult to access.
