The Osing Javanese live at the easternmost tip of the island of Java, concentrated in the Banyuwangi region, across from the island of Bali. Considered heirs to the historic kingdom of Blambangan, they preserve a distinctive identity within the Javanese world, with their own customs, rich musical traditions and the Osing language, proudly spoken in daily life.
Their expressive culture reflects centuries of adaptation and interaction among the region’s different influences, maintaining a welcoming way of life deeply connected to the land and local artistic celebrations.

Most of the population works in agriculture, using the fertile soil near the volcanoes to grow rice, fruit and coffee, while others make their living by fishing along the coast. A spirit of community cooperation is essential to village routines, where demanding tasks and meals are shared. Art, especially Gandrung dance and music played on bamboo instruments, enlivens gatherings and rites of passage.
Almost the entire community follows Sunni Islam, practiced in harmony with ancient spiritual traditions inherited from earlier centuries. Practices of Javanese mysticism, reverent respect for ancestral spirits and ceremonies to maintain cosmic balance remain part of daily life, blending traditional protective rites with formal Islamic prayers.

Many rural families face uncertainty because of fluctuating agricultural prices and the changes brought by growing tourism. Spiritually, there is a strong attachment to traditional mysticism and fear of displeasing the unseen world. The small number of local Christians need solid discipleship, protection from isolation and wisdom to share the good news in their own language and culture.
