Who they are
The Pekal are an indigenous community living along the southwestern coast of the island of Sumatra, Indonesia. With a strong cultural heritage influenced by the neighboring Minangkabau and Rejang peoples, they preserve their own linguistic identity and live primarily in small rural villages. Community life is deeply shaped by the Islamic faith and by mutual solidarity among local families.
