Who they are
The Phuthi, who call themselves ebaPhuthi, live mainly in southern Lesotho. Their nation took shape in the early 19th century under King Murena Moorosi, who died in 1879 when the British captured his stronghold. Their language, siPhuthi, is closely related to Swati and has been influenced by Sesotho, spoken by their neighbors. Today, only a few thousand people speak it, and children still learn it as their first language in just two valleys in Quthing District. Almost all Phuthi identify as Christians.
