Quechua de Apurímac
The Quechua of Apurímac inhabit deep valleys and steep slopes in the southern Peruvian Andes. Heirs to ancient civilizations that preceded the Inca Empire, they proudly preserve their mother tongue, handed down from generation to generation through songs, stories, and communal traditions. Life at high Andean altitudes has shaped a resilient people, deeply connected to the land and grounded in mutual cooperation. Although many young people migrate to urban centers in search of education and work, their bond with their home villages and with their Quechua identity remains the living foundation of their culture.

Daily life in the mountains revolves around subsistence agriculture and livestock farming. Families cultivate diverse varieties of potatoes, corn, and native grains, in addition to raising llamas, alpacas, and sheep. Work is organized through ayni, an ancestral system of mutual aid among neighbors during planting and harvesting. Colorful wool weavings and community festivities express their artistry and mark the seasonal cycles.
The vast majority profess historical Catholicism, often blended with ancestral Andean beliefs. Respect for and seeking permission from Pachamama, Mother Earth, and the apus, the protective mountain spirits, still guide daily life and agriculture. Traditional rituals and blessings coexist with celebrations honoring village patron saints.

Villages face harsh winters, a lack of basic medical services, and geographic isolation caused by rugged terrain. Spiritually, there is a shortage of well-equipped workers who deeply understand the local worldview, as well as a lack of discipleship resources in the heart language, so that the Christian faith may transform lives beyond religious tradition.
