Rajput kanet

The origin of the Rajput kanet traces back to the Kuninda dynasty, which ruled parts of eastern Himachal and the Kumaon region before the Christian era and during its first centuries. The name kanet is thought to have arisen from sound shifts of the word Kuninda over the centuries, and the memory of this mountain royal past remains alive in how the people tell their own story.

Over time, kanet families spread across the mountains of Himachal Pradesh, settling in districts such as Mandi, Kullu, Shimla, and Sirmaur. The arrival of British rule in the nineteenth century brought a new social order that reclassified the people as an agricultural caste, a label that coexisted, not always peacefully, with the oral tradition of noble origin the kanet still preserve today.

The life of the Rajput kanet centers on mountain agriculture: barley, wheat, lentils, corn, and potatoes sustain families who work terraces and hillsides throughout the year. Marriage within the group is the norm, and inheritance follows the father’s line, keeping land and surname joined across generations.

The clan and extended family remain the central reference for important decisions, from marriage to conflict resolution. Illiteracy still affects women and girls the most, a sign of how access to education remains uneven in mountain communities.

The vast majority of the Rajput kanet follow Hinduism, practiced in the mountains with strong influence from Buddhism and local popular religion, especially among families closer to regions like Kinnaur and Lahul. Household rituals, seasonal festivals tied to the farming calendar, and the veneration of deities and local spirits are part of daily religious life. Small family and village shrines receive simple offerings, and each planting and harvest season has its moment of celebration.

Being kanet is tied to this Hindu mountain practice almost as part of clan identity itself: faith is not just personal belief but family and lineage heritage, passed down together with the land and the name.

The predominant language among the Rajput kanet is Kangri, alongside other languages of the region such as Mandeali, Mahasu Pahari, and Bilaspuri, plus Hindi as a broader contact language. A New Testament was published in recent years, but it circulates little among families, and the complete Bible in the people’s language is still on the way. For most, contact with Scripture in their own mother tongue remains a rare experience.

Among the Rajput kanet, Hindu faith is intertwined with clan identity and the very notion of family honor, which makes any change of religion seen as a break with the lineage and the land of the ancestors. The isolation of mountain communities, the distance between valleys, and the near total absence of churches or Christians nearby make any first contact with the gospel rare.

Access to education remains limited in many families, especially for women and girls, and life in the mountains demands hard work to secure the harvest on difficult terrain every year. There is a real need for more Scripture available in the people’s heart language, for solid discipleship and community for the few who already follow Jesus today, who face isolation because of their faith amid families and villages that are still entirely Hindu. Workers able to live near these mountain communities are also needed.
