The clan's tradition traces back to Pundarik, an ancient king revered as a sage, from whom the Pundirs take their name. For centuries, the Pundir Rajputs settled in the hills of what is now Uttarakhand and in western Uttar Pradesh, where they became major landholders and stood out for clan cohesion and resistance to outside powers, including during British rule.

With the expansion of the British Empire from the late eighteenth century onward, many Rajputs, the Pundirs among them, were recruited into the colonial military forces, further reinforcing the group's warrior reputation. In the twentieth century, political changes in independent India abolished the titles and privileges the Rajput nobility had held for generations, but the memory of that past remains alive in the clan's identity.

The Pundirs organize themselves by families and communities tied to historic landholding, a trait that marked the clan as one of the most influential in its region for generations. Belonging to the clan and respect for lineage remain central to social life, shaping alliances, marriages, and each family’s place within the wider community.

Recounting the exploits of warrior ancestors is a living part of Pundir culture, and some families today run guesthouses and historic properties where they welcome visitors interested in this heritage. Clan honor and pride in noble origin remain central values passed from father to son.

The Pundir Rajputs are Hindu, and their faith is deeply intertwined with clan identity and the memory of their warrior ancestors. Among the deities most worshipped by Rajputs in general are Shiva, associated with destruction and transformation, Surya, the sun god linked to the clan’s solar lineage, and Durga, the warrior mother goddess, whose worship resonates with the Pundir tradition’s own martial calling.

Religious practice blends with rituals honoring lineage and ancestors, reinforcing the idea that being Pundir means belonging to both a warrior caste and a devout one at the same time. This bond between Hindu faith and ancestral pride makes religious identity almost inseparable from clan identity.

Hindi, the most widely spoken language among the Pundir Rajputs, has had the complete Bible available for a long time, with the New and Old Testaments translated and revised over more than two centuries. Audio, video, and digital app versions in the language also exist today. Even so, the distance between the available Scripture and the Pundir clan is more cultural than linguistic: caste pride and the strong identification between Hindu faith and ancestral honor make it rare for a Pundir to approach the biblical text.

The greatest obstacle to the gospel among the Pundir Rajputs is the pride tied to their own history: centuries of status as warriors and nobles feed a strong identity, one that still enjoys social prestige today, and that resists the idea of surrendering like a child before any message that does not reaffirm that greatness. Added to this is the intertwining of caste, Hinduism, and family honor, which makes conversion a risk to social standing and to belonging within the clan.

The Pundir Rajputs need people who truly know their history and how the caste system works, so they can approach them with respect and without oversimplification. The group’s greatest spiritual need is the near total absence of their own Christian community: there are very few Pundirs who follow Jesus, and those who believe face the challenge of living out their faith in isolation, without a support network within their own clan. There is also a lack of disciplers able to proclaim the gospel in a way that honors the family’s and clan’s honor, rather than demanding that a Pundir give up that identity all at once.
