The Rufiji are a Bantu people who live mainly along the fertile banks and delta of the Rufiji River in eastern Tanzania. Their history and culture are deeply connected to the region’s waters and forests, where they maintain a way of life shaped by the cycles of river flooding. How they live
The daily lives of the Rufiji revolve around the waters of the great river. They grow rice on the floodplains, along with cassava and corn, combining farm work with small-scale fishing and the sustainable gathering of forest resources. Communities are organized in riverside villages, where cooperation among neighbors during planting season and mutual hospitality are essential everyday values.
What they believe
The vast majority profess Sunni Islam, adopted over centuries through contact with the trade routes of the Swahili coast. Islamic practice is central to celebrations and the social order, although it often coexists with traditional customs that seek protection from local spirits and honor the memory of ancestors in times of illness or hardship.
