The Buryats are the largest Indigenous people of Mongol origin living in Siberia, concentrated mainly around the immense and sacred Lake Baikal. With a nomadic and pastoral heritage dating back centuries, they maintain a vibrant cultural identity expressed in their own language, music, and ancient oral traditions.
Even while fully integrated into modern life in the Russian Federation, the Buryats preserve a deep connection to the land and the mountains of their homeland, maintaining ancestral customs while seeking to sustain their language amid the changes of urban life.

How they live
Historically herders who raised horses, cattle, and sheep on the Siberian steppes, many Buryats now live in rural villages or industrial cities. Community life is marked by respect for elders and warm hospitality, with traditional milk tea and mutton dishes served as part of every welcome.
Popular festivals celebrate skills such as traditional wrestling, archery, and horse racing, keeping their ancestors’ traditions alive.
What they believe
The people’s spirituality combines elements of Tibetan Buddhism with ancient practices of traditional shamanism. Rituals on sacred hills, trees tied with colorful ribbons, and prayers to appease nature spirits remain part of daily life.
For most, following these customs is inseparable from their identity as Buryats, creating distrust toward spiritual paths different from those practiced by their ancestors.
