People
The Safaliba live in northern Ghana, in villages such as Mandari, near Bole. They grow yams, cassava, millet, maize and peanuts, and also extract shea butter. A common writing system for their language was only established in 2003, and the first bilingual Safaliba-English dictionary was published in 2014 as part of efforts to teach adults and children to read in their own language. Most are Muslim, some follow traditional religions, and Christians are a minority: the Catholic Church is the main influence, with few Protestant churches.
