UnreachedThe Sagarbanshi are a tribal people from eastern India, living mainly in Odisha and West Bengal, with the largest concentration in the Sundarbans region, the vast mangrove forest stretching along the coast of the Bay of Bengal. It is a landscape of rivers, tides, and channels, where dry land and water intermingle nearly all year round.
Life beside the mangroves has shaped the people’s identity: many families support themselves through fishing and rice cultivation in the lowlands, while others venture into the forest to gather wild honey and other resources it offers, work that requires courage and knowledge passed down from generation to generation.
Because of their tribal way of life, geographic isolation, and poverty, the Sagarbanshi hold a position of low status within Indian society, which is predominantly Hindu. This marginal standing deepens the challenge of being seen, heard, and reached.

The geography of the Sundarbans dictates the rhythm of life: rivers and tides cut the territory into islands and channels, and traveling by boat is part of daily life. Rice farming and fishing sustain much of the community, supplemented by selling fish and forest products in local markets.
Gathering wild honey is one of the people’s most distinctive trades: men enter the forest in search of hives among the mangroves, dangerous work that shares the territory with the region’s wildlife. This forest knowledge, passed from father to son, is part of what defines who they are.
The Sagarbanshi follow Hinduism, practiced within an Indian society where religion is deeply tied to social standing and each community’s identity. As a tribal people of low status, their religious practice coexists with devotion to local deities specific to communities that live at the edge of the forest.
Among communities that depend on the forest and the sea for survival, it is common to venerate protective deities linked to the woods and rivers, invoked before entering dangerous territory in an attempt to secure protection against the real dangers of the mangroves. This everyday religiosity, marked by fear and respect for nature, exists alongside the broader Hindu rites practiced in the region.
The heart language of most Sagarbanshi is Odia, a language that has had the New Testament available for more than two centuries and the complete Bible for nearly two centuries, along with audio resources and apps. Despite this availability, there are almost no Odia-speaking Christians, and Scripture remains practically unknown among the people, far from their hands and their daily life.
There are practically no Christians among the Sagarbanshi, and this scarcity repeats among other Odia-speaking peoples in the region: there is almost no local Christian witness to draw on. Reaching them will require someone from outside the community, and from another language, to carry the message to them. The geographic isolation of the Sundarbans and the people’s low social standing within Indian society deepen this distance.
Life beside the forest and the sea is harsh and unpredictable: fishing and honey gathering depend on weather, tides, and the natural risks of the region, and poverty is a constant companion for many families. The people’s low social standing within Indian society also limits access to opportunities, education, and basic services. Alongside these material needs, there is an even greater lack: that of someone to bring the people the good news of Jesus in their own language and culture.
