People
The Sahafatra are an indigenous people who live in the rural and forested regions of Madagascar, forming part of the Malagasy cultural mosaic. Their identity is deeply connected to the land, the forests, and the rhythms of traditional agriculture. They share linguistic ties with the Malagasy language family and preserve a rich communal memory, passed down from generation to generation through proverbs and oral accounts that shape daily life and sustain their families’ sense of belonging.

Life among the Sahafatra revolves around cultivating the land, especially rice, which forms the foundation of their diet and culture. They also grow cassava and small cash crops to supplement family income. Villages are structured around family lineages, with respect for elders guiding collective decisions. Community solidarity is essential during planting and harvesting, keeping mutual cooperation alive among neighbors and relatives.
The traditional worldview, based on respect for and fear of ancestors, still exerts a strong influence on community life. Animist practices, funeral rites, and adherence to local taboos, known as fady, shape daily decisions. Although some of the population has contact with nominal forms of Christianity, ancestral customs remain the main spiritual point of reference for most.

The geographic isolation of many villages makes it difficult to access health clinics, safe, treated drinking water, and quality formal education. Spiritually, there is a lack of local leaders trained to teach the Bible and disciple younger generations, clearly communicating the gospel message of grace, peace, and hope.
