The Saho Irob form a distinctive community in the mountains of the Horn of Africa, living mainly along the rugged border between Eritrea and northern Ethiopia. Linguistically related to the region’s Cushitic peoples, they are distinguished by a strong communal identity forged in isolated valleys and difficult terrain. Their heritage combines ancestral customs with a history of resilience and adaptation to the semiarid environment.

Irob life revolves around herding goats, sheep and cattle on steep slopes, supplemented by traditional terrace farming. The rugged terrain shapes an austere way of life in which mutual help between clans is indispensable for daily survival. Local assemblies play a vital role in mediating disputes and preserving oral memory, passed down through poetry and proverbs across generations.
The people have a marked religious divide within a shared cultural framework. While a substantial portion follows Sunni Islam, with practices integrated into pastoral routines, another portion embraces a historic Christian tradition associated with Eastern rites. Respect for family ties and shared codes of honor often unites neighbors of different faiths, although a personal understanding of a living faith in the Savior remains limited.
A people only truly understands the gospel when they hear it in the language of their heart. See how far the translation has come.

Geographical isolation and geopolitical tensions along the border limit access to medical care, safe roads and educational opportunities for young people. Frequent droughts worsen water shortages and force pastoral families to relocate periodically. Spiritually, there is a need for discipleship and deep fellowship among local believers, as well as resources that clearly communicate the grace of Christ in their own dialect.
